Sheriff’s Station J-Team Member Appears On ‘The Way Out Recovery Hour’ On KHTS

A member of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s Juvenile Intervention Team made an appearance on a recent “The Way Out Recovery Hour” on KHTS to discuss the J-Team’s role in offering help to youth dealing with substance use issues in the community.

Created in 2010, the J-Team is made up of two deputies, a detective and a sergeant from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, in addition to civilian and retired deputy Travis Sabadin.

Though the initial goal was to target juveniles around 12-17 years old, Sabadin explained that the J-Team has recently expanded its focus on helping a larger age group.

“We’ve noticed the resource that we have been able to provide is now helping such a wider range of people, so we’ve taken our age group and we actually bumped it up now,” Sabadin said.

The three main components of the J-Team include education, intervention and enforcement.

In terms of education, the J-Team mainly focuses on educating parents who can then talk to their kids, but sometimes also educates youth directly, according to Sabadin.

Sabadin serves as the J-Team’s intervention specialist as a civilian, working to provide help to those in need throughout the community.

“That’s one of the biggest things I tell people when I have conversations with them, is don’t look at the badge,” Sabadin said. “I’m not here to put hooks on you. I’m here to provide you the help that you want and the help that you need.”

Finally, deputies from the J-Team work on the enforcement side, Sabadin said.

The youngest person Sabadin has had the experience of working with was 12 years old, which Sharits commented is consistent with drug use statistics.

“Most drug use starts between the ages of 12 and 17,” Sharits said. “And a lot of it today is even closer to 12, I think, than 17, certainly.”
