Larry Schallert - Mental Health - The Way Out Recovery - January 28, 2019

As a community we are still grieving the loss of a beloved man, friend and pastor at Real Life Church Jim Howard, who took his own life recently.

I host a weekly radio show on KHTS FM 98.1 & AM 1220 called The Way Out Recovery SCV and I recently sat down with Larry Schallert, the Assistant Director of the Student Health and Wellness Center at College of the Canyons to talk about mental health resources here in Santa Clarita.

Larry and the staff at COC help students of all ages, COC students are as young as 16 and old as 90, and they provide resources to students that are available at other hospitals and medical facilities around the valley. In addition to physical treatment, COC’s Student Health & Wellness Center provides mental health treatment to the students at COC.

The center also has resources for students dealing with mental health issues like suicidal thoughts. They even host suicide prevention events like Shine A Light Program, where they place 1,100 chinese lanterns on their honor grove to represent the 1,100 college students who take their lives every year. They also do many different kinds of trainings for students and staff members to recognize signs that someone, or they themselves, may be struggling.

According to Larry, each student has 6-8 free sessions at the Student Health and Wellness Center each semester that is covered in the health fee they paid for. Students can have access to health care for illnesses, pregnancy and STD prevention and mental health struggles.

The center is located right across from the bookstore on the Valencia campus.
