February is Teen Dating Awareness Month. I host a weekly radio show on KHTS FM 98.1 & AM 1220 called The Way Out Recovery SCV and I recently sat down with Nila Karimzai from the Domestic Violence Program at The Child And Family Center.
She’s been coming into The Way Out for a few months to talk to teens about what a healthy relationship looks like and how to stay away from any abuse or violence.
We are an intensive outpatient program located at the corner of Plum and Bouquet canyon road. Our specialty is substance use disorder, but we also help people who are going through a difficult time in their lives, or know someone who is. We always welcome visitors! Drop on by and let’s just have a conversation, asking for help is absolutely the first step.
Studies show that one in three high school students have been in a, or will be in an abusive relationship. Nila reminded me during the show how important it is to include boys in the conversation because although many boys are victims of abuse, they are much less likely to report it. Men have a way of thinking they can handle things without getting any help, and that just isn’t the case. We all need help healing.
Nila holds presentations called, “In Touch With Teens,” which is an 11 unit, evidence based curriculum about many issues that teens face and focuses on the “six C’s” that help build a relationship. The Six C’s are, Communication, Compromise, Compatibility, Commitment, Consideration and Conduct.
Nila and I also talked extensively about how to talk to kids about relationships, video games, the culture we live in, social media and everything else.
At The Way Out Recovery SCV drug rehab, we provide confidential family group counseling weekly, addressing family systems theory, healthy communication skills, conflict resolution, genetic components of addiction and supportive interactions.
We at The Way Out Recovery SCV are an intensive outpatient rehabilitation program that helps people recover from their addictions while still maintaining their daily responsibilities in life. We know one of the hardest steps is reaching out and asking for help, and we are here when you decide. Call us today at 661-296-4444.
