I host a weekly, live on-air radio show at KHTS FM 98.1 & AM 1220 called The Way Out Recovery Hour where we discuss all things addiction and recovery related here in the Santa Clarita Valley.
I welcomed guest Tim Harrington on my show this week. He, his wife, and their two daughters all drive around on a renovated school bus to talk to people about breaking the stigma behind substance abuse and mental health.
Their mission statement is: “One bus, two parents, two tweens, a dog and a year of service in search of Wide Wonder. As accomplished thought leaders, authors and activists in addiction, recovery and mental health, we seek to expand conversations, reduce stigma and experience radical transformation.
We believe full lives are possible when we heal in communities and family systems and abandon stigma and labels. We let go of all we thought we should be and have, and instead, we root down in connection with ourselves and others as we meet vibrant communities and individuals in search of change. A refurbished school bus is our ‘tiny house’ for the year, and we are opening ourselves wide to the possibilities of all that is before us and within us.”
“I wanted my kids to talk about what they are going through mentally just as easily as they talk about what they are going through physically,” said Tim.
He and his family hope to see mental health and mental fitness talked about, acknowledged and worked on just as easily as physical health. They hope to see mental health emergency centers pop around to help people in crisis. They also hope to encourage people to talk about what they are feeling and thinking freely.
