This week I talked a lot about the brain, how it works and what that mean for addiction. We know more about the universe than we do about the human brain, but scientist have been able to map out brain functionality.
We now have a better idea about what part of the brain is responsible for what parts of our actions, thoughts, and behaviors.
There are two parts of the brain that play a huge role in addiction. The first is the prefrontal cortex, and this is the big part of the front of our brain. The prefrontal cortex is where abstract thought takes place. An addicts prefrontal cortex might function differently than a non-addict, so when a loved one might say to an addict, “If you loved us enough you would stop,” but that’s not completely fair when we are talking about someone whose brain works differently. They might actually, physically not have the ability to stop like other people might.
The second part of the brain that plays a big role in addiction is the limbic system. The limbic system of the brain is responsible for thoughts and behaviors about survival.
Scientists did a study where they were able to administer cocaine to the limbic system of mice and give them the ability to either get more cocaine or get food to continue to survive and every single moose choose death from cocaine over food for survival. It completely overrode their basic drive towards survival.
I hope people learning about the brain, creates more love and compassion for people. To listen to the full show and to learn more, click here.
