I recently welcomed guest Melissa Flowers who is a drug counselor at the Way Out Recovery, and one of her specialties is in relapse prevention. Her and I talk on the show about how a common misconception is that an addicts problem is drugs and alcohol.
You see, there are people who get in trouble with drugs and alcohol and then they stop and their lives get better. When we work with addicts, yes we first get them off of drugs and alcohol, but the real work is helping them learn how to navigate life and learn better coping skills.
“The biggest things we help our clients with is in implementing healthy coping skills,” said Melissa, “It’s imperative that when something happens, they have a peer group to go and talk to.”
We help them set goals, create community and help them learn how to learn how to cope with issues that come up without drugs and alcohol.

We don’t teach people to go through life with blinders on, and not do anything that would stress you out. We teach people that they can be sober no matter what comes up.
